What problem does NFC product tagging solve?

Customers lose paper manuals. QR codes on packaging get damaged or thrown away with the box. Support teams field repetitive questions that a self-service page could answer.

An NFC tag on the product itself gives customers permanent, one-tap access to the information they need — long after the packaging is gone.

How does the Kitetags solution work?

You attach a Kitetag to your product (inside the casing, on the label, or embedded in packaging). The tag uses the URL Redirect app to send the customer to a product-specific webpage whenever they tap it.

How do you set it up?

Step 1 — Create a group for your product line

  1. Log in to your Kitetags dashboard.
  2. Create a new Kitetag Group named after your product line (for example, “SmartWidget Pro”).
  3. Define a KDS (data structure) with fields like:
    • product_name (text)
    • sku (text)
    • info_url (text) — the URL of the product info page

Step 2 — Add tags and set the URLs

  1. Add Kitetags to the group — one per product unit or per product SKU.
  2. Fill in the info_url field for each tag. This is the page customers will see when they tap.

Step 3 — Configure the URL Redirect interaction

  1. Create an interaction on the group.
  2. Select the URL Redirect app as the action.
  3. Map the info_url KDS field as the redirect target.
  4. Save the interaction.

Step 4 — Test the tag

Tap the Kitetag with your phone. Your browser should open directly to the product info page. Verify the page loads correctly on both iPhone and Android.

What do customers experience?

  1. The customer notices the NFC tag symbol or a “Tap for info” label on the product.
  2. They hold their phone near the tag.
  3. Their browser opens and displays the product information page within about one second.
  4. They can view specs, download a manual, check warranty status, or contact support.

No app install is needed. No camera. No typing a URL.

Tips for product info tags

  • Use a dedicated landing page. Link to a clean, mobile-friendly page with specs, FAQs, and a support link. Avoid sending customers to a generic homepage.
  • Update the URL anytime. If you move or redesign your product page, update the info_url field in the Kitetags dashboard. The physical tag stays the same.
  • Consider multiple groups. If different product lines need different data structures, create a separate group for each line.
  • Add authentication. For higher-value products, use webhooks instead of URL redirect to verify the tag’s UID before serving the page. See the product authentication example in the developer guide.
