Kitetags FAQ — Common Questions About NFC Tags
Answers to frequently asked questions about Kitetags NFC tags. Learn about accounts, callsigns, subscriptions, data security, and NFC chip compatibility.
What is a Kitetag?
A Kitetag is a pre-encoded NFC tag made by Tagstand. Each tag has a unique identity and connects to the Kitetags cloud platform. When someone taps a Kitetag with their smartphone, the platform delivers a response you configured — such as a URL redirect, a digital business card, or a webhook call.

Do I need a phone app to use Kitetags?
No. Modern iPhones (iPhone 7 and later) and most Android phones (Android 5.0 and later) read NFC tags natively. The person tapping your Kitetag does not need to download or install anything. Their phone’s built-in NFC reader handles the tap, and the response loads in their default browser.
How do I create a Kitetags account?
- Go to kitetags.com and click Sign Up.
- Enter your email address and create a password.
- Verify your email.
- You are in. You can now claim tags and start configuring them.
If you received Kitetags from Tagstand, follow the quickstart guide to claim your first tag.
Can I change what happens when a tag is tapped?
Yes. That is one of the main benefits of Kitetags. The physical tag never changes, but you control the behavior from the Kitetags dashboard. You can update the interaction at any time to switch apps, change redirect URLs, update vCard details, or point to a different webhook endpoint.
Changes take effect immediately. The next tap uses the new configuration.
What is a callsign?
A callsign is a human-readable name assigned to a Kitetag. Instead of remembering a long hardware UID like 04A23CF2B96A80, you can identify a tag by a callsign like blue-falcon-42. Callsigns make it easier to find and manage tags in the dashboard.
See the full glossary for more Kitetags terminology.
How many tags can I manage?
The number of tags you can manage depends on your subscription plan. Kitetags offers plans for individuals, small teams, and enterprise deployments. Check your account dashboard or visit tagstand.com for current plan details.
What happens if my subscription lapses?
If your subscription expires or payment fails, your tags enter a frozen state. Frozen tags stop responding to taps with your configured interactions. Instead, they display a default page indicating the tag is inactive.
Your data and configuration are not deleted. Once you renew your subscription, your tags resume working with the same settings. See the troubleshooting guide for more details on frozen tags.
Can I use Kitetags with my existing systems?
Yes. Kitetags offers two integration paths for connecting to external systems:
- Webhooks — Send tap data as a JSON POST request to any HTTP endpoint. Use this to connect to your own backend, a CRM, or any SaaS platform that accepts webhooks.
- Zapier — Connect tap events to 6,000+ apps without code. Popular connections include Google Sheets, Slack, Salesforce, and HubSpot.

What NFC chips do Kitetags use?
Kitetags use NTAG chips that comply with the NFC Forum Type 2 Tag specification. These chips are compatible with all NFC-enabled smartphones. The chips are read-only once encoded — they cannot be rewritten or cloned — which adds a layer of security for applications like product authentication.

Is my data secure?
Kitetags takes data security seriously. Here is how your data is protected:
- Encrypted connections. All communication between phones, the Kitetags platform, and your endpoints happens over HTTPS.
- Unique tag IDs. Each Kitetag has a factory-set, read-only UID that cannot be duplicated.
- Access control. Only authenticated account owners can view or modify tag configurations in the dashboard.
- Webhook security. Webhook payloads include a unique delivery ID for verification. See the webhook reference for details.
If you have specific compliance requirements, contact Tagstand support to discuss your needs.
