Kitetags Zapier Integration — Setup and Cost Guide
Connect Kitetags to Zapier step by step. Generate an API key, create a zap with a Kitetag tap trigger, and plan your Zapier task usage for NFC automations.
What does the Kitetags Zapier integration do?
The Kitetags app on Zapier lets you turn an NFC tap into an automated workflow. When someone taps a Kitetag, Zapier receives the tap event and runs whatever actions you configure — logging a row in Google Sheets, sending a Slack message, creating a CRM contact, and more.
No code is required. You build everything through the Zapier visual editor.
How do you set up Kitetags on Zapier?
Follow these steps to connect your Kitetags account and create your first zap.
Step 1 — Generate an API key
- Log in to your Kitetags dashboard at kitetags.com.
- Navigate to Apps in the left sidebar.
- Click Generate API Key.
- Copy the key. You will need it in the next step.
If you already have an API key, you can reuse it. See the API overview for details.
Step 2 — Find the Kitetags app on Zapier
- Log in to your Zapier account.
- Click Create Zap (or + Create then Zaps).
- In the trigger search bar, type Kitetags.
- Select the Kitetags app.
Step 3 — Authenticate your Kitetags account
- Zapier prompts you to connect your Kitetags account.
- Click Sign in to Kitetags.
- Paste the API key you generated in Step 1.
- Click Yes, Continue.
- Zapier tests the connection. If it succeeds, you see a green checkmark.
Step 4 — Configure the trigger
- Choose the trigger event: Tag Tapped.
- Optionally filter by a specific Kitetag Group to limit which tags fire this zap.
- Click Test Trigger. Zapier pulls in a recent tap event so you can preview the data fields.
You will see the same KDS fields described in the webhook reference — uid, callsign, group info, and all custom data fields you defined in your data structure.
Step 5 — Add actions
- Click the + below the trigger to add an action step.
- Search for the app you want to connect (for example, Google Sheets).
- Choose the action event (for example, Create Spreadsheet Row).
- Map the Kitetags data fields to the action fields.
- Test the action and review the result.
Step 6 — Publish the zap
- Name your zap something descriptive (for example, “Conference Check-In Logger”).
- Click Publish (or Turn on Zap).
- Your zap is now live. Every qualifying tap will trigger the workflow.
Example — Kitetag tap to Google Sheets row
Here is a concrete example of a working zap:
| Step | App | Event | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Kitetags | Tag Tapped | Group: “Conference Badges” |
| Action | Google Sheets | Create Spreadsheet Row | Maps first_name, last_name, email, timestamp to columns A-D |
When an attendee taps their conference badge, a new row appears in your Google Sheet within seconds.
How many Zapier tasks does each tap use?
Zapier charges based on tasks. Each step in a zap that executes counts as one task.
| Zap structure | Tasks per tap |
|---|---|
| Trigger + 1 action | 2 tasks |
| Trigger + 2 actions | 3 tasks |
| Trigger + filter + 1 action | 2-3 tasks (filters that stop a zap do not count) |
How to plan your Zapier quota
Estimate your monthly tap volume and multiply by the number of tasks per tap:
Monthly tasks = Monthly taps x Tasks per tap
Example: You expect 500 taps per month and your zap has a trigger plus 2 actions (3 tasks per tap). You need 1,500 tasks per month.
Zapier’s free plan includes 100 tasks per month. The Starter plan includes 750 tasks. Check Zapier’s pricing page for current plan limits.
How do you troubleshoot Zapier issues?
- Zap not triggering? Make sure the zap is published (turned on) and your API key is valid. See the troubleshooting guide for more details.
- Wrong data in action? Check that your KDS fields are mapped correctly in the Zapier editor.
- Authentication error? Regenerate your API key in the Kitetags dashboard and reconnect in Zapier.
